Sri Lanka Rescues 30 Sailors from Sinking Iranian Warship Near Its Waters
As reported by The Economic Times, Herath stated that two Sri Lankan naval ships and one aircraft were deployed for the mission. However, he did not provide specific details about what caused the Iranian frigate to start sinking.
The warship, which was carrying around 180 crew members, reportedly issued the distress signal at dawn. Following the alert, Sri Lanka’s navy promptly initiated rescue efforts. Injured sailors were transported to the main hospital in the southern city of Galle, located about 115 kilometers from the capital, Colombo. Local authorities said the hospital had been placed on standby in advance to receive the rescued personnel.

During a parliamentary session, an opposition lawmaker questioned whether the vessel had come under attack amid ongoing U.S.–Israeli military actions. The government, however, did not immediately respond to that speculation.
Sri Lanka Navy spokesperson Buddhika Sampath told Agence France-Presse that the incident occurred within Sri Lanka’s designated search and rescue zone in the Indian Ocean. He emphasized that the rescue operation was carried out in line with international maritime obligations after responding to the distress signal.
Officials added that Sri Lanka acted in accordance with its international responsibilities and is ensuring necessary medical care and assistance for the rescued sailors.
