Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said it could be the strongest Atlantic hurricane of the 2025 season. It will bring flooding, landslides and strong winds after it makes landfall.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are urging people to seek shelter as soon as possible. Melissa is packing winds of up to 180 miles per hour.
Melissa formed as a tropical storm on Tuesday, October 21. It strengthened into a hurricane on Saturday.
Ann Claire Fontan, a storm specialist at the World Meteorological Organization's Vishnu Mandal, told a press briefing that Melissa is set to be the storm of the century for Jamaica. The damage is expected to be extensive. Flooding, landslides and high winds will wreak havoc on the islands and could knock out power. Jamaicans have been advised to seek shelter.
Meteorologists fear the storm could be the worst disaster of the century for the island nation.
